[edit] Host
The game was helmed by veteran game show host Allen Ludden.
[edit] Format
Two celebrity-contestant teams played against each other.
The object of the game was to guess a person, place, or thing based on one word clues, much like Ludden's show Password. The difference was that each player on the team gave clues to their counterpart (contestant gave clues to contestant, celeb to celeb). A slight difference was that the contestant and celebrity were given three words to describe the subject, and had to pick from them which one they thought would be least likely for their opponent to guess the Stumper.
After each clue was given, the player would have five seconds to rattle off as many guesses as they could. If the player guessed the subject correctly on the first clue, they earned 15 points. If the contestant was stumped, play continued the same way, with a correct guess on the second clue being worth 10 points. If the player again failed to guess the Stumper, the third clue was given with 5 points for a correct guess. If after three tries the player couldn't get the Stumper, the opposing team had a chance to guess, with a correct guess being worth 15 points. If neither team guessed the Stumper correctly, play continued with the next Stumper. Two Stumpers were played in round 1.
Two rounds were played.
The second round was called the "Double-Up Round", and all points were doubled. Two Stumpers were played, as before, but either player could now guess regardless of whether it was their turn or not.
The team who was ahead at the end of the Double-Up Round won the game and a chance at $10,000 in the Super Stumper round.
[edit] Super Stumpers
The Super Stumpers round was played as such.
The celebrity had to try to convey 10 Stumpers in 60 seconds, through use of the three clues. This time, the celebrity chose the most likely clue to help the contestant along. If a contestant was stumped, they could only receive another clue by saying "clue". Each correct Stumper paid off at $100, with all ten being worth $10,000.
The contestant could stay until defeated or they won the bonus round twice.
[edit] Trivia
- Allen Ludden showed up on the premiere of 50 Grand Slam to promote Stumpers! and to wish that show's host, Tom Kennedy, good luck. Neither show had much luck, as both premiered and were cancelled on the same day.
