Stumpers!

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stumpers! was a game show that aired on NBC for three months in 1976, from October 4 - December 31. The show was hosted by Allen Ludden; it was announced by Bill Armstrong, then later Charlie O'Donnell. It was produced by NBC Daytime VP, Lin Bolen.

[edit] Gameplay

Two teams of two (consisting of one celebrity & one contestant) competed in a game of solving puzzles with three clues called Stumpers. One member of the team in control was shown the three clues and gave one that he/she thinks is the least likely for a member of the opposing team to identify with. A correct answer from the opposing player in one clue was worth 15 points, a correct answer in two clues was worth 10 points, and solving the stumper on all three was worth five points. If the opposing team cannot solve the stumper after all three clues were used, the clue giving team then got a chance to solve the stumper themselves for 15 points. The game was played in two rounds with the values doubling in round two (30 points in one clue, 20 in two, and 10 in three). The team with the most points at the end of the game won a chance to play the Super Stumper round for $10,000 or $20,000.

[edit] Super Stumpers!

In the Super Stumper round, the celebrity of the winning team was shown three clues to a series of stumpers; unlike the main rounds, the celebrity must give a clue that he/she thinks is the most likely to guess the solution from; to receive another clue the winning contestant must yell out "clue". Each correct answer won $100, and solving ten stumpers won $10,000, but that's on the first go-round, on the second go-round the grand prize was $20,000. Champions retire if & when they win the $20,000.
