Student/Farmworker Alliance

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Student/Farmworker Alliance (SFA) is "a national network of students and youth organizing in direct partnership and solidarity with farmworkers to eliminate sweatshop conditions and modern-day slavery in the fields." The SFA operates on the principle of collective liberation, through which they encourage members to recognize, understand and challenge privilege and oppression in contemporary society. The SFA formed in 2000 as a student network in solidarity with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) during their historic Taco Bell Boycott.

During the boycott, the SFA grew to a network represented in over 300 university campuses and 50 high schools nationwide. The SFA "Boot the Bell" strategy, in which students persuaded administrations to cut or not renew contracts with Taco Bell was successful on 22 campuses. This was especially important as Taco Bell’s target audience is 18-24 year olds, the group a 1999 Taco Bell press release termed the “New Hedonism Generation”.

[edit] After the Boycott Victory

In the wake of the Taco Bell Boycott victory, the CIW focused in 2006 on the McDonald's Corporation, demanding better wages for the farmworkers providing tomatoes in their production chain. The SFA engages students in national and regional "Truth Tours", provides campus speakers, invites students to Immokalee and provides campaign materials and support for their campaigns.
