Stuart is a town in Patrick County, Virginia, United States. The population was 961 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Patrick County^GR6. Stuart is home to an annual festival, the Easter Brothers' Homecoming Gospel Sing, held every July in Dominion Valley Park. The celebration is in honor of a local group that gained national fame, the Easter Brothers ^[1]. Stuart is also home to legendary NASCAR team the Wood Brothers and to novelist Martin Clark.

Stuart even hosts the oldest continuous beach music festival on the East Coast, "Hot Fun in the Summertime" presented by the Virginia Jaycees.

Stuart is located at 36°38′25″N, 80°16′26″W (36.640197, -80.273940)^GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²), all land.

As of the census^GR2 of 2000, there were 961 people, 449 households, and 246 families residing in the town. The population density was 501.4/km² (1,301.5/mi²). There were 516 housing units at an average density of 269.2/km² (698.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 81.89% White, 15.09% African American, 2.08% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.68% of the population.

There were 449 households out of which 25.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.9% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 45.0% were non-families. 42.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.09 and the average family size was 2.85.

In the town the population was spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 85.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $20,192, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $29,375 versus $19,938 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,265. About 21.3% of families and 24.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 36.2% of those under age 18 and 20.1% of those age 65 or over.
