[edit] Plot
Magazine reporter Jonathan Fisher (Reeve), in danger of losing his job, promises to write a factual hard-hitting story of prostitution. But when he tries to get information from the subjects, he is ignored. So he ends up faking a well received story of a pimp, describing his life and crimes. But police think the story is of a real life pimp who is wanted for murder and start pressuring him to reveal the identity of subject in his story, and all he knows. The pimp (Freeman), the police suspect, also thinks the story is about himself, and wants to know what Jonathan knows, and who told him. From there a battle of wits and wills ensues between Jonathan and the pimp, in addition to Jonathan becoming involved with one of the pimp's call girls (Baker).
[edit] Trivia
- This was a long time pet project of Christopher Reeve, but he was having difficulty getting the film financed. When the Cannon Group acquired the rights to the fourth and final Superman film, Reeve agreed to do the film partly because Cannon promised to give Street Smart the financial backing it needed.
- Morgan Freeman received an Academy nomination as "Best Suppoting Actor" for his role in "Street Smart", which boosted his acting career. Critics praised Freeman's performance but ignored Reeve's performance. This was odd, considering that Christopher Reeve wanted the film to re-energize his career at that time.
