Strait of Otranto
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Strait of Otranto connects the Adriatic Sea with the Ionian Sea. It is named after the Italian city of Otranto.
During World War I the strait was of strategic significance. The Allied navies of Italy, France, and Great Britain, by blockading the strait, prevented the Austro-Hungarian Navy from entering the Mediterranian Sea, effectively keeping them out of the naval theatre of war.
