The effects of Hurricane Ernesto in Virginia was sigifigant. Ernesto formed on August 24 and crossed the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea where it briefly reached hurricane status before quickly weakening due to its interaction with Haiti. After affecting southern Florida and the Carolinas as a tropical storm, Ernesto passed over eastern and central Virginia before it became extratropical on September 1.

Ernesto dropped heavy rain across Virginia, causing moderate freshwater flooding and high winds from Ernesto caused moderate tree damage that left two people dead. Total damage in Virginia from Ernesto amounted to $118 million dollars (2006 USD).
