Sir Breunor le Noir, nicknamed La Cote Male Taile (the badly-shaped coat) by Sir Kay after his arrival in his murdered father's coat at King Arthur's court. He received his knighthood after saving Guinevere from an escaped lion.
After being granted knighthood, Sir Breunor accompanied a damosel whom arrived at Arthur's court, bearing a black shield (with a white hand with a sword emblasoned on it) along with a mission. She told her audience that the previous knight whom carried the shield died while on the quest, and that she, was searching for a knight of similar courage to continue on the mission. La Cote Male Taile decided that he was fit enough to carry out the unknown mission, and volunteered to go with the damosel. She, disliking that this was to be her chosen knight, continuously taunted him regarding his clothing and appearance, earning her the nickname Maledisant.
After leaving the castle on his quest, le Noir encountered Dagonet, whom was sent by the King to joust with the new knight. Sir Breunor quickly defeated Dagonet, but Maledisant's taunts increased because it was the Court's fool, which was sent to challenge le Noir.
Breunor later encounters to other knights, Sir Bleoberis and Sir Palomides. He was challenged by both, and unhorsed by both. They refused to fight him on foot, and walked away, drawing more criticism from Maledisant.
Breunor later travelled with Mordred to Castle Orgulous. The knights must fight there way into the castle; after Mordred was injured by one of two knights guarding the castle gates, le Noir kills the two knights and continues into the castle on his opponent's horse. There, he meets a hundred knights in a lady's chamber. When he gets off his horse to challenge them, the chamber's owner ties his horse to a postern, so he cannot escape. Breunor somehow won his way through the knights with the aid of the black shield, mounted his horse, and escaped from the castle.
After retelling his tale of escape to Mordred and the damsel, she challenges his story as being false, and sends a witness to speak of what happend in the castle. This only proved to Breunor's story and Maledisant wrong to disbelieve him, though Breunor continues to hold his peace and not rebuke her about her disbelief of him.
They continued to travel for seven more days until Mordred leaves and Lancelot du Lake joins the couple. Lancelot, however, ends up leaving them for his own quest and after Maledisant redirected her words at him.
The travel for a few more days and come upon the Castle of Pendragon, where one of six knights challenges La Cote Mail Taile to a joust. Breunor successfully wins the joust, but the other five knights attack him in an un-knightly manner, and take him and the damosel into the castle as prisoners.
Lancelot and ends up rescuing Breunor from the castellan and guards of Castle Pendragon. After their release, Lancelot agrees to ride with them on one condition only: that the damsel stop directing ill words at Breunor and himself. Maledisant then confesses that the only reason for her taunting was that she was testing the knights' strength (if they could take a little teasing from her, then they were apt to continue on the mission).
Travelling for a few more days, the came upon a fortress with a village, near the border of the country of Sursule, which was guarded by knights. La Cote Male Taile entered the castle alone, and continued on to another fortress after defeating two brothers that challenged him in the first fortress. In the second castle, Breunor came to face again with Sir Plenorius. Breunor could not carry on a fight due to the wounds he recieved in the first joust, so Sir Plenorius, out of pity, decided not to finish him and instead carried him into the tower as prisoner. When Lancelot heard of this, he challenged Sir Plenorius to a battle that of which lasted many hours and resulted in Sir Plenorius' yielding.
Breunor remained at the castle in order to recover from his wounds. He recovered quickly and returned with Lancelot and the damosel to King Arthur's Court, with the quest being accomplished. Lancelot gave Sir Breunor the deed to Castle Pendragon. Breunor was made a Knight of the Round Table the following Pentecost.
After their adventures, "Maledisant" softened towards Breunor, resulting in her renaming of Bienpensant, and was later chosen by Sir Breunor to be his bride.
