Storm Cat

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Storm Cat (born 1983) is an American stallion thoroughbred racehorse whose breeding fee is currently the highest in the world. As such, he is one of the few horses with a 24 hour armed guard and the only horse with two continually manned sniper towers guarding his enclosure.[citation needed]

He was sired by Storm Bird, son of Northern Dancer. His dam is Terlingua, who was sired by Secretariat. The dark bay/brown horse had an unexceptional racing career but is now best known for the success of the racehorses he has sired.

The 1999 and 2000 Leading sire in North America, Storm Cat currently stands at stud at Overbrook Farm in Lexington, Kentucky. As of December 2006, he has sired 31 winners of Group 1/Grade 1 stakes, 93 winners of group or graded stakes races, and 150 stakes winners worldwide who have earnings in excess of $100 million. Also, as of the same date, 16 of his sons have already sired Group 1/Grade I winners. He was the leading sire of stakes winners in North America in 2005. His fee for 2007 is US$ 500,000 for a live foal.

At the Keeneland September 2004 yearling sales, a Storm Cat colt since named Mr. Sekiguchi sold for $8 million and in the 2005 sale another of his colts sold for $9.7 million. The price was the highest ever paid for a yearling sold at the Keeneland September sale and is third-highest overall. At the Fasig-Tipton Florida auction in February 2006, Coolmore Stud paid a world record $16 million for a Florida-bred two-year-old colt in training named The Green Monkey sired by Forestry who was sired by Storm Cat.
