Stony River is the name of two separate rivers in New Zealand.

The Stony River in the North Island (also known as Hangatahoa) is one of numerous small rivers which flow from the western flanks of Mount Taranaki into the Tasman Sea. Its mouth is 18 km (11 mi) southwest of New Plymouth.

The Stony River in the South Island runs west for 30 km (19 mi) through the Mackenzie Basin before emptying into Lake Benmore.
