Stoney Creek High began in 1997 when voters approved a bond issue for building improvements in the growing district. Despite controversy, the school board decided to name the school after the nearby historic village of Stoney Creek. The 320,000 sq. ft. high school opened in 2001 at a total cost of $44 million.

In 2006, the Varsity football team went 8-1 in the regular season and lost 14-6 in the first round of the playoffs to Grosse Pointe North. The JV team won its division at 8-1 and the Freshman team went 3-6.
