Stone City Art Colony

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Stone City Art Colony, along the Wapsipinicon River in east central Iowa, was formed by Grant Wood (of American Gothic fame) during the depression. It was meant as a refuge from the Great Depression for artists. Residents lived in ice house wagons that they decorated themselves. Out of this group came a large number of Depression Era murals (thanks to the New Deal) that still decorate many post offices and public buildings in the midwest. Sometimes large amounts of artists flocked there for the free food and living.
