[edit] Wikipedia Thoughts

I contribute to Wikipedia for several reasons. Frankly, the most important reason is entertainment—Wikipedia is much more fun than television. The next most important (and pleasantly idealistic) is my hopes for Wikipedia’s future. One of my favorite parts of science fiction futures is when the Solar System has developed a noosphere combined with a pervasive Internet. In these futures, one can be connected at a low level to the sum total knowledge of all humanity, all the time. Of course, to be able to connect the species together like that, we’ll first have to compile all knowledge. This is where I hope Wikipedia is headed—literally an encyclopedia for everything. I think Wikipedia would make an important, even vital, resource for a fledgling cyber-noosphere. Perhaps, by contributing to Wikipedia, I am helping bring about that future.

A third reason I contribute is to give back to the project: it’s certainly the most complete and easiest-to-access collection of knowledge in existence at this point, and I’ve used it countless times to look stuff up.

I feel that "knowledge yearns to be free." Facts should not be intellectual property in the long term, although research costs may need to be recouped. Wikipedia is the major project supporting this goal, thus, I support Wikipedia.

[edit] AFD thoughts

Although I want Wikipedia to be an encyclopedia of everything, I am not against deletion — I want all knowledge included eventually, but I think the value of the knowledge is relative to Wikipedia’s current state. Notability is key. Articles written about people's pet projects, meaning vanity articles, do not belong in Wikipedia until after it already has all the important knowledge. Patent nonsense is right out at any stage.

[edit] AFD and Don't bite the newcomers

I'm convinced AFD is one of the worst things possible with respect to our Don't Bite the Newcomers policy. More often than not, they wander into AFD bewildered and angry that their article was nominated for deletion. This manifests in minor ways, like unformatted and unsigned votes, and more important ways, like a misunderstanding of Wikipedia process and consensus. Often they attempt to make points about the validity of their article, which usually go callously unanswered by the community (who, having seen the type of article before, is sick of answering the same arguments.) They then see "consensus" as "whatever the cabal says", and I think this drives away many potential contributors. For examples of this sort of thing, see the deletion vote pages for Battlefield Ninjas, Celer Mortis, and this fraternity with a long title.

[edit] Interests

I'm interested in Chemistry, Biology, and predictably Biochemistry. Other interests include Epidemiology, Evolution, and the generation of protein tertiary structure from primary structure. If I've made a recent edit to a biochemical topic, chances are very good that we covered that in one of my classes recently.

I'm also a pretty good resource for games and hardware manufactured by Nintendo. I play far more video games than are healthy for me. Sometimes I like to watch Wren set things up and then explode them.

[edit] "Important" Contributions

I wrote fetch quest (now a section of Quest (gaming)) and most of Sigma Star Saga. The stub for Death by chocolate is was mine - guess what I had for lunch that day? Abandoned ship is largely mine. I've got a couple of hundred disambiguations in there too. I'm responsible for 70.177.207.186's contributions in Jan-May 2005, and the earliest contribution by 128.239.213.40. I RC Patrol when I'm bored, and compulsively fix grammar and spelling errors when I see them. I've added in info from classes on Histone, Histone deacetylase, Histone acetyltransferase, and other biochem articles as well. I created Grand Divisions (Tennessee) mostly by copying info in from other articles, and I started J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. (I really should reorganize this as a bulleted list.) I created Category:Michel Gondry music videos because I like Around the World (Daft Punk song), Come Into My World, and Star Guitar.

[edit] Other Lands

I've got accounts at Meta, Commons, and Wikiquote. (This is more for my reference than yours.)

[edit] Pictures (gasp!)

[edit] Plans and watched articles

I wrote quite a bit of and still closely watch Governor's School for Government and International Studies. I think I ought to write Marshal Bravestarr to relive my early childhood.

Video game physics needs an update to include cartoon physics.

FIRST needs to be split into its component parts. The histone modification enzymes might get an update after I write a paper on them.

[edit] Things You Don't Care About

FYI, stillnotelf is not meant to be capitalized, but the wiki-gods want it that way. You can AIM me @ stillnotelf.

on a related note, i do not believe in capitalization - i think it overly complicates the language. on the other hand, i don't intend to spread my heresy through poor wikipedia...

(I'm also of the opinion that the semicolon, colon, and dash are underused pieces of punctuation. Commas get all the credit, but the aforementioned three much more closely mimic speech.)

Æ is fun but unnecessary.
