Stile Project
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stile Project is a website that was created by Canadian Jonathan Biderman, who used the pseudonym "Jay Stile", in 1999. [1][2]
The site has developed into a large network of counter-culture, amateur adult entertainment, current-events sites and forums known as stileNET. Stile Project gained popularity in 1999 when Biderman faked his suicide live on a webcam. Howard Stern talked about the suicide stunt on a broadcast of the syndicated radio program, "The Howard Stern Show". Rock musician Marilyn Manson at one time had a link to Stile Project displayed on his web page, resulting in massive amounts of traffic to Stile Project. The Stile Project website received the Webby Award for best "Weird" site in 2000 and the People's Voice award in the same category. [3]
Stile Project was the home to one of the earliest interactive cam portals, where people could post pictures of themselves. The Stile Project webcam portal eventually evolved into a separate website called Cam Whores. The contents of Stile Project have become increasingly pornographic. Biderman has faced legal trouble and protests of his site several times; including, using a picture on his website without consent, a photo compilation of aborted fetuses, and posting a video of a kitten that was cooked and eaten.
Biderman is a former member of the 1990s era BBS underground artscene groups ACiD and iCE.[4]
