I re-wrote the page and added pictures of the real double figure eight knot. Merged the original content with the figure-of-eight loop and merged the info from the Stevedore knot page. I am a bit sceptical that this knot was invented by a rope company. I bet that it predates the company but I have no proof at this time.

I agree about the origin issue, especially for such a simple knot, and have moved the Cyrus Day-sourced comments to the lead. I changed the wording to "was published by" rather than the original wording which implied origin or invention. That the name comes from a company who popularized the knot isn't too big a leap. --Dfred 19:53, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Rename to Stevedore knot?

The vast majority of references I have found to this knot call it the Stevedore knot. Ashley lists another knot as the "Double figure eight knot" (#523) and further implies there are several others called by this name. I try not to get hugely hung-up on knot names wrt to WP article titles, but in this case I think Stevedore is a much less ambiguous name for this knot and avoids confusion with the many other knots having "figure-eight" as part of their name. I plan on moving the article unless there are objections. --Dfred 19:53, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
