[edit] Boundaries
The constituency covers the Borough of Stevenage, as well as the villages of Codicote and Knebworth to the south and Aston, Benington, Datchworth and Walkern to the east.
As part of the Boundary Commission's review of Hertfordshire constituencies, Walkern and Benington will move from the Stevenage constituency to the North East Hertfordshire constituency for the next general election.
[edit] Analysis
Another Southern England new town seat with volatile voting patterns; it was Tory between 1983 and 1997 until Labour easily gained it; but their winning margin in 2005 was unconvincing and the Conservatives are certainly back in the hunt again. Labour performed poorly in Hertfordshire in 2005; they lost three other seats in the county, and now this and Watford, which itself has an even more narrow majority (this time over the Liberal Democrats) are their only remaining holds in the county.
[edit] Members of Parliament
- 1983 – 1997: Tim Wood, Conservative
- 1997 – present: Barbara Follett, Labour
