Steven, the beloved older brother of Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield, is a pre-law student at Sweet Valley University.

At the beginning of the Sweet Valley High series, Steven was dating Tricia Martin, the daughter of one of the town's poorest families. Tricia avoided the substance abuse problems that plagued her alcoholic father and her drug addicted sister Betsy, however she was diagnosed with leukemia and died soon after.

His next girlfriend was Jessica's best friend, Cara Walker. Although Steven and Cara had dated during his brief break up with Tricia, Steven thought of Cara as shallow and superficial. The pair began dating seriously after the divorce of Cara's parents, which helped to mature her.

Betsy Martin had temporary misgivings about Steven's new relationship, fearing that he was forgetting about Tricia, but later relented, even sending them potraits she had drawn as a concillitory gesture.

Steven met his latest girlfriend, Billie Winkler, after Cara moved to London. They remained together through the book series end, although he did date Jessica's friend, Lila Fowler for a time, while trying to figure out who had tried to burn down Lila's house.
