Steven McDonald
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Steven McDonald is a New York City police detective who was shot in the line of duty while questioning suspects in 1986. One of the bullets that hit him shattered his spine, and since then he has been paralyzed from the neck down leaving him quadriplegic. He does a variety of guest appearances, notably with U.S. Navy (he was a sailor) and speaking with students about violence and forgiveness.
His wife, Patricia Ann McDonald was elected Mayor of Malverne on Long Island in March, 2007. [1]
The New York Rangers ice hockey team established an award in his honor following the 1987-88 season. The award's official title is the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award. Officer McDonald personally presents the Ranger with a trophy and a $25,000 check (in the player's name) made out to the Steven McDonald Foundation.
