Steve Sidwell (born 14 December 1982 in Wandsworth, London) is a professional footballer who plays for Reading in the Premier League.
A central midfielder, he was part of the Arsenal youth team that won the FA Youth Cup in 2000 and 2001. He had successful loan spells with Brentford and Brighton, but could never break into the Arsenal first team. He moved to Reading in January 2003,[1] where he has been a great success. In 2004, Four Four Two Magazine voted him the best player outside of the Premier League.
A vital part of Reading's Championship-winning 2005-06 squad, in April 2006 Sidwell was named in the Championship Team of the Year[2] by the Professional Footballers' Association, keeping the place he had been given the previous year.
In the summer of 2006, Sidwell rejected a contract extension,[3] and it was rumoured that he might be sold to Everton, Charlton Athletic[4] or Manchester City,[5] as his current contract runs out at the end of the 2006-07 season. However, due to Reading's success in their first Premier League season, Sidwell has indicated that he may yet remain at Reading.[6] He has been linked with Aston Villa, Manchester City, West Ham United, Middlesbrough, Charlton Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Glasgow Rangers, and more impressively Manchester United, Chelsea, Glasgow Celtic, Newcastle United and even Spanish side Valencia.
However, lately most rumours have been linking him with a move to Newcastle and some papers claim a deal is agreed.
[edit] Trivia
- Sidwell married Krystell on 19 June 2005. Within days of returning from their honeymoon, Steve had a tattoo of the wedding vows he had written for Krystell placed on his back.[7] Their son Harry was born in April 2006.
