Steve Murphy

Steve Murphy (born 1957-09-09) is a State Senator for the 28th district of Minnesota, and a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. He represents parts of Goodhue, Wabasha, and Winona counties in the south-eastern portion of Minnesota.
Murphy has attended Red Wing Technical College as well as Eastern Illinois University. He is also a four-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Prior to being elected Senator, he worked as an operator with Northern States Power (now Xcel Energy), and has spent over 25 years with the company. He has also worked at the Prairie Island Nuclear Power Plant for six years, as well as the Red Wing Steam Plant for 19 years. He has been married twice and has two children, Nik and Matt.
Murphy was first elected to the 78th Session of the Minnesota Senate as the Senator of the then-29th district. He is currently serving his eighth term. He is the chair of the Senate's Transportation Committee and the Transportation Finance Division. He is seated in the Agriculture, Veterans, and Gaming Committee, the Capital Investment Committee, and the Finance Committee. He has also been appointed to several Workforce Development Councils by Senate leadership and the Governor.
