[edit] Beck

During the early Nineties in Los Angeles, Hanft befriended fellow struggling musician and artist Beck, who became a frequent collaborator for years to come. Together they formed the punk metal band "Loser" (later called Liquor Cabinet) and played out around Los Angeles. Hanft, a graduate of the Cal Arts film program, was working on his first feature at the time, Kill The Moonlight, which Beck sampled in his breakthrough song "Loser". During the initital buzz of the Loser single, Hanft was enlisted to direct the music video, which in turn became a smash hit on MTV. This was the first of 8 videos he would work with Beck on, continuing up until the early 2000's.

[edit] Elliott Smith

Hanft was also close with musician Elliott Smith, directing Strange Parallel, a promotional short film released in conjunction with Smith's XO album. Hanft also directed the accompanying "Baby Britain" music video and was close to Smith at the time of his death, helping organize the first memorial concert in his honour in which Beck, Rilo Kiley, Radar Bros., and others played.
