Steve Durant

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Steve Durant is a former politician in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. He was born on May 13, 1983 in Kingston, Ontario.

Durant was active in the Newfoundland and Labrador general election of 2003, when he ran as an "Independent Green" for the Terra Nova Green Party. Durant broadened the party's focus from the single issue anti-dragger campaigns of the past, and received positive coverage from local media. One article described him as, "Passionate about issues such as innovative health care, universal education and a healthy environment".

On July 28, 2004, Durant ran for the Canadian House of Commons, representing the Green Party of Canada in Humber—St. Barbe—Baie Verte, but lost to Gerry Byrne of the Liberal Party of Canada.

After the 2004 election, Durant completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science at Memorial University of Newfoundland and returned to Ontario for a post-degree course in corporate communications at Centennial College.

He currently lives in Toronto and works as communications officer at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, an Ontario government agency. Although he continues to be interested in environmental issues, Durant does not plan to run again and is no longer a card-carrying member of any party.
