Stephen Tyng Mather High School

Stephen T. Mather High School, part of the Chicago Public School system, serves the north side of the Windy City. A widely diverse, multi-ethnic population of around 1,818 is enrolled in the school. The school is named for Stephen Tyng Mather, the first director of the National Park Service.

The school campus shares 13.75 acres (56,000 m²) with recreational Mather Park on Peterson Avenue, initially known as Peterson Park. The property is jointly operated by the park district and the Chicago Board of Education.

The high school has a natatorium and two gymnasia. Mather Park, adjacent to campus, has one senior baseball and four junior softball fields, two combination football and soccer fields, four basketball courts and six tennis courts.

More that half the school's students almost 2000 students speak English as a second language, so the bilingual ESL program is crucial to the school. The school has a 12.1% dropout rate as of 2005school report, and 90% of seniors intend on attending a full- or part-time school after graduation. [1]

There is significant overcrowding in the school, as there are 11 different periods to disperse the many students among. By order of the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), each class must have atleast 25 students, further adding a burden to overcrowded classes and taking attention away from individual students.\

The school has teachers fluent in languages such as Chinese, Arabic, Assyrian (spoken in northern Iraq), Spanish, Russian, Serbo-Croat, Spanish, Gujarati, and Urdu. As well as teaching, the multi-enthnic staff help students and their families by acting as translators and mentors.
