Stephen Moylan (1737 – 1811) was a the 2nd Quartermaster General in the United States Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.
Stephen Moylan was born to a wealthy Catholic family in Cork. His family sent him to be educated in Paris. Moylan then worked in Lisbon for three years before finally moving to Philadelphia.
Moylan joined the American Continental Army in 1775 and initially held a variety of staff positions. He started off as Muster-Master General before becoming secretary to General George Washington. Promoted to colonel, he moved on to become Quartermaster General in the American Continental Army. He resigned from this final position in 1776.
Moylan then gained a field command. He became colonel of a cavalry regiment, the 4th Continental Light Dragoons, also known as Moylan's Horse. The regiment was raised on January 5, 1777 at Philadelphia. The year the regiment would see action at the Battle of Brandywine and the Battle of Germantown. In 1780, the Dragoons were sent south to join Lafayette's forces in Virginia. In 1781, Moylan led the Dragoons in the Battle of Guilford Court House. In 1781 Moylan commanded his Dragoons at the Siege of Yorktown. Moylan's regiment was furloughed on June 11, 1783. He was breveted to brigadier general on November 3, 1783, the date he left the army. On November 15, 1783, Moylan's regiment was disbanded.
