Weeks after her death, he auditioned for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He graduated from RADA In July 1994 and swore off television for years, preferring to take what he saw as the less limited opportunities on the stage.

His breakthrough television performance was as Adrian Mole in the six-part BBC TV show series Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years in 2001 but he is probably best known as one of the stars of the Channel 4 comedy Green Wing, playing Doctor Guillaume Valerie Secretan (Guy). He played an egotistical, highly successful British TV comic with his eye on Hollywood in Annie Griffin's critically acclaimed film Festival in 2005, and appeared in the British film Confetti which was released on 5 May 2006.
