From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stephen M. Smith (b. 1948), also known as "Hurricane" Smith or “Smythe,” is a professor at Franklin Pierce College, [1] who is dying of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He lives in Keene, N.H. [2] and teaches courses in the M.B.A. in Leadership program, where he is known for a passionate teaching style. [1]

In 2002, Smith was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, yet he decided to continue teaching.[2] He founded a non-profit, the Stephen "Hurricane" Smith Fund.[2] He created it as a model for other ALS patients to raise money for their own care.[2] After his death, the fund is expected to continue raising money for ALS research.[2]

Smith earned a B.A. and an M.B.A. at the University of New Hampshire and a M.Ed., plus an Ed.D. at the University of Massachusetts.[3]
