[edit] College career
Gionta attended Boston College, where he was a team leader for the Frozen Eagles en route to their 19th Frozen Four appearance. As an alternate captain on the squad, he scored 32 points in 39 games.
[edit] Pro career
He was not drafted by any team, but later signed as a free agent with his older brother's team, the New Jersey Devils. Towards the end of the 2005-06 season, he spent time with their minor league affiliate, the Albany River Rats. At the start of the 06-07 season, he is with their new team, the Lowell Devils. He is on the team with Mike Pandolfo and Jordan Parise, who also have brothers (Jay and Zach, respectively) playing for the Devils, marking arguably the first time that three sets of brothers are playing for the same system simultaneously.
