Stephen Donaldson (Columbia University)

Stephen Donaldson is the pseudonym of Robert A. Martin, Jr (b. July 27, 1946, Norfolk, Virginia19 July 1996) who founded the Student Homophile League at Columbia University in 1967, the first known gay student organization in the world[1]. Donaldson, who took the pseudonym to protect his identity in the pre-stonewall years, was also an activist against prison rape and a writer.

Donaldson returned to Columbia in the mid-1970s to pursue graduate studies in religion and was ordained as a Theravada Buddhist monk.[2]
