Stephen Clackson (born April 23, 1961) is a British natural philosopher noted for his work in x-ray crystallography.

He recognized that most Bragg planes in a cylindrically bent crystal lattice must lie on Archimedean spirals [1]. Clackson also applied spiral theory to wrought iron work with the formulation of a simple equation, known as the Clackson scroll formula, to enable blacksmiths to calculate the length of metal required to make a scroll [2].

Dr. Clackson, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, is also an heraldist known for his lampooning of the nouveau Scottish baronage. [3].
