Due to his strong performance in the light-heavyweight finals, Bonnar was awarded a contract to fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, despite losing to Forrest Griffin by decision (see Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar).

Bonnar's MMA record is 9-4-0 as of September 6, 2006. He weighs 205 lbs and stands 6'3".

Stephan trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with the legendary Carlson Gracie, under whom he is a black belt.[citation needed]

[edit] Steroids controversy

Stephan Bonnar tested positive for an anabolic steroid after his fight against Forrest Griffin at UFC 62 on August 26, 2006. The specific banned substance that was found in Bonnar's post-fight urine sample after his unanimous decision loss to Griffin was Boldenone Metabolite, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission's drug testing results. Bonnar was subsequently issued a 9-month suspension on his fighter's license and was fined $5,000 by the NSAC. [3]
