Stendhal is an open source multiplayer online adventure game (MMORPG) written in Java, using the Arianne game development system. The game is licensed under the GPL. Its map graphics strongly resemble those of the 1991 SNES game The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and its gameplay that of Tibia, another MMORPG. The monsters and human graphics are largely from the Charas Project, part of the RPG Maker series. The latest version, 0.58, was released on Mar 11 2007. Even though Stendhal is still heavily under development, it is fully playable.

The server website has the following text:

Stendhal features a new, rich and expanding world in which you can explore towns, buildings, plains, caves and dungeons. The player will meet NPCs and acquire tasks and quests for valuable experience and cold hard cash. The character will develop and grow and with each new level up become stronger and better. With the money you acquire you can buy new items and improve your armour and weapons. And for the blood thirsty of your; satisfy your killing desires by roaming the world in search of evil monsters!
