Senator of the Lega Nord in 1994 and member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies from 1996, Stefano Stefani succeeded as federal president of the party to Franco Rocchetta in 1995. He maintained this position until 2002, when he was replaced by his fellow Liga Veneta's member Luciano Gasperini.

In the 2001-06 legislature, he was two times under-secretary to Silvio Berlusconi's government. In 2006 he was elected member of the Italian Senate, being at the top of the list of the Lega Nord in Veneto.
