Stefan Liv (born December 21, 1980, in Gdynia, Poland) is a Swedish professional ice hockey goaltender contracted by the Detroit Red Wings in NHL, currently playing for Grand Rapids Griffins in AHL.

Liv is originally from Poland but was given to an orphanage in Gdańsk and was later adopted by a Swedish family when he was about two years old. At the time Liv had been given the name Patryk Sliz, the former has he kept as a middle name.[1][2]

[edit] Playing career

Stefan Liv was the starting goaltender in HV71 and is often chosen for the Swedish national team; on December 22, 2005, he was named as third goaltender to Team Sweden for the 2006 Winter Olympics.[3] He wears the glove on his left hand. He is agile; quick in moving from side to side; good with close-ranged shots;[4] and his unorthodox style reminds some of Dominik Hasek.[5]

Liv played his first Elite League game in Sweden on January 18, 2000, in Jönköping for his team HV71 against Luleå HF. His first national appearance was in a match against Czech Republic, also in Jönköping, on November 9, 2000. Stefan Liv was drafted in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by Detroit Red Wings with their 3rd round, in the 102nd overall selection.[6]

Liv signed a one-year contract with the Red Wings in May, 2006[5] but started season 2006-07 playing for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL.[7] He was recalled by the Red Wings on November 17, 2006.[8] On November 26, 2006, Liv was back with the Grand Rapids playing against Houston Aeros. Two days later, Liv was assigned to Toledo Storm in ECHL when the Grand Rapids recalled goalie Logan Koopmans.[9] He was later recalled by the Grand Rapids.
