I felt there was a confusion in the original article between mechanically-switched compensation; static var compensation involving thyristor-switching for smooth voltage control; and dynamic var compensation, which involves rotating plant. I tried to include what I could of the original article, mostly from the advantages list. A number of the advantages listed there were however applicable to all voltage control systems, not just to SVCs. --BillC
