[edit] Merge?

I disagree that the entry itself should be merged with History of Banking in India. The SBI is not just something from history that needs to be mentioned when discussing the history of banking in India. It is very much an existing, active entity. And the largest one of its type anywhere in the world if you judge by the actual number of employees, branches, etc.iFaqeer (Talk to me!) 20:55, Jan 28, 2005 (UTC)

So feels me. But, guilty of being unable to contribute much so far to this, I couldn't say anything. Let's improve the article. -- Sundar 04:04, Jan 31, 2005 (UTC)

  • some descrepancies in dates in the section Roots and the sub-section Timelines shall shortly be taken care of. In case, any one has information, kindly reconcile the same. thanks.--Bhadani 17:31, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] The world's largest bank had until recently the shortest article...

...thankfully it's now a decently sized one, though there is a lot to add. I feel guilty of not having added and expanded this earlier since my dad works in this bank and I have more info. It's just that i'm busy putting up new articles I forgot this. Hopefully I'll add more crisp and updated info in days to come. --Idleguy 09:31, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

That is nice to learn, I mean about your dad. The State Bank of India is right now celebrating its 200th year of active existence. We all wikipedians, you, me and several others shall surely make this article really great. Please also see my comments on the talk page of State Bank Of India to this effect. And, in anycase, you were not Idle, you have been doing ideal work, I am sure. --Bhadani 15:58, 13 July 2005 (UTC)
Thx mate. I'm flattered. Here's to the spirit of wikipedia. Cheers. --Idleguy 06:21, July 14, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Fact check

Some anon has changed the number of branches of SBI from 9000 to 9900. Can someone verify that? -- Sundar \talk \contribs 04:09, July 20, 2005 (UTC)

As far as I know from sources from the bank, it has 9000+ branches in India. Outside India there are another 51 branches in 32 countries. so the total might come close to 9100 and odd but NOT 9,900 because then the bank would be claiming close to 10,000 branches which is a milestone. So this figure is wrong. I'm changing it accordingly. -- Idleguy
Thanks Idleguy. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 06:03, July 20, 2005 (UTC)
The latest information is also scheduled to be released where I'm told that the figure is likely to be revised. Since SBI seldom releases accurate figures of its branches only the closest number can be obtained. However as soon as I get it I'll update it, but in all possibility it isn't 9900. --Idleguy 07:49, July 21, 2005 (UTC)
I am up-dating the number of branches of the State Bank of India, based on a link of the The Hindu: (An artcile in The Hindu about SBI
I must add that the article had a few errors including mentioning the wrong startup date etc. Moreover the figure is also dated. According to a recent internal report in SBI they have close to 9400 branches (excluding foreign branches which remains the same). the figure for associate banks has not been accurately updated so the 4000+ number remains. Thx for putting in the effort to update the figures. Cheers. Idleguy 05:59, July 24, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks, I do agree with you, and I would suggest that if you have the updated information, please donot hesitate to to incorporate the same in the article. You MUST be surely right, as somewhere I saw SBI has around 13500 branches, including branches of the Associate banks. In the absence of exact information, Please also see Bank of Madras and Imperial Bank of India.--Bhadani 06:08, 24 July 2005 (UTC)
