[edit] Potential Removal - Flagged by other user

Coppied and pasted from RichHoncho's UserTalk page, written by myself:

It has come to my attention that you had flagged the Wiki article for Starfire Assistant as noncomforming with the Non-Notable and the Vain policies. I dont know who took out the flag, as you do apparently feel that it is a bit... how shall I say, wrongish. I agree that it might fall under 'Vain', and would propose removing the instructions on how to use and update (As that is located on SA's site itself, and isn't needed here), but non-notable... Of the two versions of Starfire in use, SA is the only assistant software that handles anything but ship creation for 3rd Edition, something that I think makes it notable enough to at least mention with a link, but because it is 3rd party (and due to politics between the owner of Starfire, Marvin Lamb, and the creater of SA, Steve Walmsley), I don't think it belongs on the Starfire main page...

I'll create the talk section on the Starfire Assistant article, so that we may continue the discussions from there. As soon as I find it, I'll also add the 'cleanup' tag.

  • What I should have also added was WP:SOFT, I am not convinced that it is notable as software program, together with the "installation" details and, worst of all, an e-mail address for contact - so it also fails WP:SPAM. All this is my opinion, and I will, for the time being, bow to your judgment. I do suggest you, or somebody else, edits the article to show it's notable, removes the spam, adds references and make it suitable as a enclyclopaedia article. Otherwise, I am sure, some other editor will come along and wonder what the article is doing here. --Richhoncho 19:04, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
  • I feel it is notable, as Starfire Assistant is the cause of 3rd Edition Starfire to be removed from being sold, as well as being the only support program for Starfire 3rd Edition campaign games. An entire community has evolved around Starfire Assistant. Now, I agree that the installation instructions and e-mail contact make this fail WP:SPAM, and the author of Starfire Assistant misunderstood the point of a Wikipedia article, and so will remove the Install Instructions and E-mail contact, replacing them with a link to the Starfire Assistant website. As for the references, what can I use for them? The most editing I've ever done on a wiki article was fixing two internal links to show the proper pages (Mispellings caused 'em), so when it comes to substantiating information... What would be acceptable as a notable source for SFA? Bengaley 22:38, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
    • As for the criteria in WP:Software, I feel that Starfire Assistant is notable. I don't know how to show that it is without doing original research, but if you are involved in Starfire online at all, you've heard of Starfire Assistant. I've removed the bits that make this fail Spam. Now my only real concern is Original Research and cleanup to meet the standards.Bengaley 22:45, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

I don’t know the rules for Wiki however I hope that I can aid in resolving this problem. So, with the best of intentions let me try to justify its originality. StarFire Assistant (SA) is the sole software support to a game that started simply and has gone on to pass through the hands of such notable entities as TFG. The specific version it supports is the Third Edition of the rules which are no longer in print. Thanks to SA a great deal of paper work is relieved from not only the game master but also from the hands of the players. Much like Eamon (which has a supporting Wiki page) this is software that will no longer be officially supported; thus knowledge of it must be preserved and the Wiki pages are the place to do this from.

I sincerely hope this helps to shed light on the need for this dedicated Wiki page, Ed Smoker Sr.

Just a simple edit to clarify that the above comment [Ed Smoker Sr.] is mine and was made prior to account creation.
