Statkraft is a Norwegian state owned electricity company. Statkraft produces 48.1 TWh electricity and 0.4 TWh thermal energy in 2005. This represents about a 40% of the total electricity production of Norway. The company has its headquarters in Oslo.

Hydroelectric power is the largest productional area for Statkraft who ownes 133 plants in Norway, 12 in Sweden and four in Finland. The company also ownes a number of wind mill parks in Norway in addition to thermal energy in Trondheim and gas power in Germany.

Statkraft ownes all of Trondheim Energiverk. In addition is has partial ownership in Skagerak Energi (66,62%), Bergenhalvøens Kommunale Kraftselskap (49,9%), Agder Energi (45,5%) and Sydkraft (44,6%).

The state bought its first power plant, at Paulafossen, in 1895. In 1921 Norges vassdrags- og energiverk is created with among other things responisbility for operating the states power plants. In 1986 the power plants and central power grid is demerged into Statkraftverkene wich again is split in Statkraft and Statnett in 1992 with Statkraft SF being created as a government enterprise. Through the 1990s and 2000s Statkraft acquired a number of local power plants in Norway in addition to expanding abroad. In 2004 Statkraft was reorganised as a limited company, Statkraft AS, still wholly owned by the state.
