Staten Island Technical High School (or Staten Island Techor S.I.T.H.S.), is one of the nine specialized public high schools in New York City. It is located in the New Dorp section of Staten Island. The school is operated by the New York City Department of Education. It consistently ranks among the best schools in New York City in graduation rate, Regent's test scores and attendance.[1]

Staten Island Tech began in 1982 as an annex of Ralph R. McKee Vocational-Technical High School, located in the St. George section of Staten Island, after New Dorp High School, which had occupied the building since it was built in the 1930s, moved to its current location on New Dorp Lane. The technical courses were taught in the annex, while the vocational courses stayed in St. George.

Through the advocacy of parents, staff, and students, Staten Island Tech was made an independent high school by the New York City Board of Education in May 1988. Nicholas M. Bilotti, who had been serving as director of the annex, was appointed principal of the new high school.

The school admitted students based on their seventh-grade class grades and standardized-test scores until 2005, when it was added to the group of New York City's specialized high schools and therefore began using the New York City Specialized High Schools Admissions Test to screen prospective students.[citation needed]

The school now ranks among the other specialized high schools in New York City and is unparalleled with the curriculum and opportunities the school offers.

The curriculum focuses on science and engineering, with classes in AutoCAD, electronics and Cisco networking. However, twelve Advanced Placement courses are offered in subjects ranging from Macroeconomics to Russian- the only language taught at the school. In addition, the school operates College Now, a program run by Kingsborough Community College. This very competitive environment continues to attract the most gifted students to Tech due in part to the relative lack of elite public high schools on Staten Island.

Graduates of the school have continued their academic success. Many are accepted into the highest-ranked institutions, with each graduating class receiving admission offers and scholarships to all eight Ivy League schools, US Service Academies, and other prestigious colleges and universities such as Columbia University, NYU, Villanova, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Georgetown, and Johns Hopkins to name a few.

Staten Island Technical High School is also known as Mckee/Staten Island Technical High School (MSIT), because of their partnership with Mckee High School in sports.

[edit] Trivia

The school was mentioned on the February 10th episode of Saturday Night Live in an SNL Digital Short called Sloths, in which a zoo keeper at the Staten Island Zoo previews a sophomorish documentary made by Tech students before watching it herself.
