English adventurer William Augustus Bowles was elected director general of the State of Muskogee by a congress of Creeks and Seminoles in 1799. The village of Mikasuke (near Tallahassee) was the capital of this state. In 1803, Bowles was taken into custody by the Spanish and died in prison in Havana.
