[edit] Campus

The high school campus is located just on the fringe of downtown State College, and spans the road Westerly Parkway. The campus comprises two buildings: the North Building and the South Building. Although students spend time in both buildings, the buildings are devised to isolate the students by grade. The recommended freshman and sophomore core classes are in the South Building, whereas recommended junior and senior core class are in the North Building. Nevertheless, some electives, including the music programs and CTC (vo-tech), are in the North Building, while the foreign language classes are offered in the South Building.

[edit] Current Controversy

South Building
South Building

Many believe that the school facilities are growing outdated and are inadequate for a growing student population. There were approximately 2600 students as of 2006, and the school was designed fifty years before that for less than half the current number of students. However, there has been community debate over the appropriate extent of renovations necessary for the school. The school board, after public hearings and deliberations, previously approved a plan to renovate the North Building as well as raze the South Building in favor of sports fields and parking. However, once the board began to plan the renovations in more depth, community opposition arose in the form of an organization called State High Vision. The group is a coalition of parents and community members who believe that the renovation process should be stopped and that further discussion is necessary. The expansion has been halted to give time for debate. While many support the school board's plan--led mainly by a group called Citizens for Constructive Progress, headed by Tobin Short--and recognize the need to begin renovations, many favor delays arguing that the plan is too expensive or that another alternative is better. The issue has taken the main stage in local politics, being played out in the local media and through numerous lawn signs.
