State Center is a city in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,349 at the 2000 census. State Center is known for its rose gardens.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,349 people, 559 households, and 354 families residing in the city. The population density was 537.0/km² (1,384.4/mi²). There were 597 housing units at an average density of 237.6/km² (612.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.78% White, 0.15% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 1.11% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.85% of the population.

There were 559 households out of which 29.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% were married couples living together, 5.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 90.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $35,766, and the median income for a family was $45,156. Males had a median income of $33,661 versus $25,156 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,744. About 5.7% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.4% of those under age 18 and 5.7% of those age 65 or over.
