Start Commercial (StartCom) Ltd. is based in Eilat, Israel - a location known as a tourist resort town rather than a Silicon Valley. StartCom was founded by Eddy Nigg in 1999 and operated initially as an Internet Hosting Provider through its MediaHost department, specialized in the hosting of web sites written in the Java programming language such as Servlets and Java Server Pages. In addition software development projects were performed by StartCom in its first years of operation. The company was privately held until it incorporated in 2005 as a private shareholder company and registered as Start Commercial (StartCom) Ltd.

In August 2004 StartCom debuted first time its StartCom Linux operating system, mainly as the result of a strategic business decision by Red Hat, the largest and most widely known producer of Linux operating systems (See also Red Hat Enterprise Linux clones). StartCom used the Red Hat Linux system extensively for its hosting business and started the production of its own distribution, when Red Hat stopped the distributions of its binary releases, by using the freely available source code thereof. The various StartCom Linux operating systems are provided via Internet download for free and includes free support for software updates.

In February 2005 StartCom announced the founding of the StartCom Certification Authority, which aims to provide free digital certification to the public and promote the use thereof. A new business model was developed by StartCom in order to support this goal. In 2006 the StartCom CA gained wide acceptance by various software vendors and its root certificate was trusted and included in many user applications (Browsers, Mail Clients, Instant Messengers)
