Stark spectroscopy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stark spectroscopy is a form of spectroscopy based on the Stark effect. The meaning of the term is different in chemistry and physics. In chemistry, the changes in the spectrum of a sample material due to the applied electric field of a known strength are used to determine the chemical composition of the sample. In physics, it is the other way around: based on the changes in the spectrum, conclusions are made about the electric field(s) present. The latter could be either static (constant in time) or dynamic, e.g. those produced by charged particles in plasma.
