Starfire Assistant (SA) is a freeware PC program designed to make playing third edition Starfire campaigns much easier than on paper. Ownership of the boardgame rules is necessary to use the software. SA follows the pen and paper rules closely but also contains a number of optional rules, primarily to support situations where software provides capabilities beyond those possible in a pen and paper game. It can be downloaded from the Starfire Assistant web site [1] and the Rigellian Diary forum includes SA discussion and announcements [2]

Starfire Assistant is a very large program with over one hundred and thirty different windows and the campaign games it supports often last several years of real time. Although an excellent tutorial was written some time ago [3], there has never been any formal help, online or otherwise, for SA. As the program has evolved over ten years rather than being designed from the ground up some of its functions could be described as quirky and its learning curve can be steep. However, the Rigellian Diary forum contains a lot of experienced users who are always happy to answer questions.

The key Third Edition Revised products for use with SA are the 3rdR Game Package and the Unified Tech Manual. Also highly recommended is 3rdR Scenario Package #3. SA does not support Fourth Edition Starfire products.

SA is unofficial software which is not supported or approved by the Starfire Design Studio.
