Some say that the town was named after an area in Bærum, Norway called Stabæk (modern spelling: Stabekk) (pronounced: stah-beck).

According to Geographical Names of Manitoba the village of Starbuck in that Canadian province is thought to have been named after the town in Minnesota by a contractor working for the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885. It states that Starbuck, Minnesota was named after William H. Starbuck of New York and who financed the Little Falls and Dakota Railroad.

The legend of two animals drowning in a river also applies to Starbuck, Manitoba. Instead of two horses the legend involves a pair of oxen named Star and Buck.

Starbuck is home to the world's largest lefse. [1]
