In fictional works (primarily science fiction and especially Star Trek) a starbase is usually portrayed as a space station serving as a military facility strategically positioned in space used to repair and re-supply starships. They are often also connected to shipyard or drydock facilities.

Many sci-fi series use the idea of starbases in their story lines, most notably Star Trek, which shows huge structures usually (but not exclusively) in orbit around planets.

Two sci-fi series are even centered on a starbase: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Babylon 5 ( but the latter was never referred to as a starbase ).

The term is not to be confused with "Basestar", the designation for the primary warships used by the Cylons in the Battlestar Galactica franchise. The reimagined series, however, does have one facility of the like, Ragnar Anchorage.
