The Star Forge is a giant and ancient space station in the Star Wars computer game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and is the setting for the game's climax. An automated shipyard, the Star Forge draws matter and energy from a nearby star, creating a virtually endless supply of ships, droids, and other war material.

[edit] Origin

According to the game's narrative, the Star Forge was a dark side artifact created by the Rakata's Infinite Empire around 30,000 BBY, 5,000 years before the Galactic Republic's formation. On the worlds they conquered – which numbered 500 at the Infinite Empire's peak – the Rakata left Star Maps that contain information on the Rakatan homeworld's location. When a plague spread among the Rakata, followed by civil war and rebellion, most of the remaining Rakata retreated to their homeworld and tampered with the Star Maps so that the Rakata's enemies could not find their home planet or the Star Forge. After the Infinite Empire's fall, the Star Forge was deserted and eventually forgotten. However, the Star Maps began to repair themselves.

[edit] Discovery by Revan and Malak

As an artifact of the Dark Side of the Force, the Star Forge corrupted those who used it, feeding their desire for power. Darth Revan and Darth Malak combine information gleaned from several partially repaired Star Maps to locate the Star Forge after the Mandalorian Wars, and these fallen Jedi used it to wage war on the Republic. After Malak's betrayal of Revan, Malak continues to use the Star Forge to battle the Republic.

[edit] Battle of the Star Forge

The player, who adopts the role of a partially amnesic Revan, learns of his history and the Star Forge's existence over the course of the game. Along with Bastila Shan and eight other companions, the player locates five Star Maps. While none of the Star Maps are fully repaired, the player's character and his companions take pieces from at least four Star Maps to locate the Rakatan homeworld and the Star Forge.

[edit] Light Side ending (canon)

Before crash landing on Rakata Prime, the player's team contacts the Republic Fleet, which arrives shortly after Revan disables the Star Forge's protective disruptor shield. Not surprised by his former master's plans, Darth Malak orders the immediate interception of the Republic fleet, expecting a speedy victory. Malak, having seduced Bastila to the Dark Side, relies on her Battle Meditation to bolster his forces' strength.

With the Republic Fleet unable to make an effective attack on the Star Forge, and the Sith seeming to predict the Republic fleet's every move, the player and his companions travel to the Star Forge to stop Malak.

The player battles through dozens of waves of Sith troopers, Dark Jedi, and battle droids created by the Star Forge. After making it to the Command Deck, the player confronts Bastila, now even more powerful after her fall to the Dark Side. After defeating her four times, Bastila gives in to the player and diverts her powers to aid the struggling Republic while the player moves on to confront Malak. As an alternative, the player may kill her, either by choice, or being unable to convince her to abandon the Dark Side.

After defeating more of the Star Forge's battle droids, the player reaches Malak. After a brief exchange of taunts, the two engage in their final duel. Malak regenerates his strength by sapping Jedi kept in suspended animation; once the player neutralizes this advantage, Malak eventually is defeated. In his last minutes, Malak contemplates what may have happened if it were him who had the second chance instead of Revan. Malak finally dies when he realizes that he made a mistake of turning to the Dark Side.

As a result of Bastila's Battle Meditation (or lack thereof), the Republic fleet breaks through the Sith defenses and attacks the Star Forge's orbital stabilizers, destroying it and causing the space station to collapse into the sun just as the player and his/her companions escape. The game ends with a cutscene in which the player and his/her companions are recognized for their feats.

[edit] Dark Side ending

After turning to the Dark Side, joining Bastila Shan, and slaying several members of his party, the player's character lands on the Star Forge to kill Malak and reclaim his title of Dark Lord of the Sith.

As in the Light Side ending, the player fights his way to the Command Deck. After defeating Malak's three elite Dark Jedi, Shan turns her Battle Meditation to help the Sith forces prevent the Republic Fleet from gaining an advantage in the battle. The player, meanwhile, pursues Malak, confronting and defeating him as in the Light Side ending. However, instead of wondering about what the past could have been, Malak denounces his throne and admits that Revan is the true Dark Lord of the Sith.

Bastila's Battle Meditation helps secure the Republic Fleet's destruction. The game ends with a cutscene of the Star Forge surrounded by thousands of capital ships. Bastila tells a band of Sith soldiers to hail the player's character as the player resumes the position of Dark Lord of the Sith.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords reveals that Revan eventually abandoned the Star Forge upon realizing that its life-draining effects would be too detrimental to the Sith.
