Stanley William Hayter (1901-1988) was a British surrealist painter and printmaker.

He was born in England on 27 December 1901.

Hayter was the founder of the printmaking studio Atelier 17, located initially at 17 Rue Campagne-Première in Paris, which later moved to New York in the 1940's then back to Paris in the 1950's. Hayter is noted for his work in the development of 'viscosity printing'. This process exploits varying viscosities of oil-based inks to lay three or more colours on a single intaglio plate.

He died in Paris on May 4, 1988.
