Standard upper ontology

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Standard upper ontology (SUO) is a IEEE P1600.1 term for a near-universal upper ontology (or foundation ontology).

The following ontologies are now competing to be used as the foundation for standard:

  • IFF Foundation Ontology
  • Suggested Upper Merged Ontology
  • OpenCyc
  • Lattice of Theories including the above and
  • A 4D ontology based on ISO 15926.
  • The Multi-Source Ontology (MSO) brings together some of these in a practical environment.

The real progress of the standard development and discussion can be monitored at Upper Ontology Summit and in this IEEE 1600.1 SUO email archive.
