Stake is a popular lawn game played outdoors between two or more people using a single metal spike, known as the stake. The players take turns throwing the spike into the air with the objective of sticking the spike into the grass.

[edit] Gameplay

The players face each other standing approximately 20 feet apart. The first player tosses the stake into using an underhand motion. While in the air, the stake must complete at least one complete rotation before hitting the ground. There are 2 ways of scoring. First, the stake may strike the ground and stick in upright. This is known as a "stake." Second, the stake may partially penetrate the ground. This is known as a "dig." A dig may determined in 3 ways. First, dirt may be observed being kicked up by the stake as it rotates. Second, a hole may be observed in the ground where the stake struck. Finally, if when lifted straight up, if the dirt, not the grass, provides resistance, a Dig has been made. In order for a throw to be counted as a stake, one end of the stake must be in the dirt and the other end must be higher than grass level. If the end is any lower than grass level, the throw is scored as a Dig. A Stake is worth one point if the sharp end of the stake penetrates the ground, and 2 points if the blunt end penetrates. A Dig is worth 1/4 of a point regardless of which end strikes the ground. Should either a Dig or a Stake happen off of bounce, the number of points is doubled. The first player to reach or exceed 5 points wins. Upon victory, the winning player must throw the stake using an overhand motion directly into the ground while completing no more than 1/2 rotation. Upon sticking into the ground, the victorious player shouts "Stake!" as loud as possible in formal celebration.
